Pearl Harbor December 7, 1941

December 7, 2020

Today, Americans recognize the attack on Pearl Harbor as one of the defining moments in American history. America was thrust into World War II and joined the battle against the Axis powers on two fronts.

On December 7, 1941, at 7:55 AM, an attack force of 353 Japanese warplanes descended on the island of Oahu, and unleashed a firestorm of bullets, bombs, and torpedoes on Pearl Harbor. Servicemen and civilians woke to the sound of explosions, as paradise became an inferno.

Though no one could have imagined it only a day before, December 7, 1941 became America’s most famous and unforgettable date of the 20th century. It was, in the words of President Franklin D. Roosevelt, “a date which will live in infamy.”

“No matter how long it may take us to overcome this premeditated invasion,” vowed the President, “the American people in their righteous might will win absolute victory.” Many Americans had hoped to avoid entering World War II, but in the wake of the Pearl Harbor tragedy, the nation united in the common cause of victory, either in uniform or on the home front.

By war’s end, what Roosevelt termed “the unbounding determination of our people” had transformed America from a nation ill-prepared for war into the mightiest of world powers, an unshakable stronghold of democracy. And through it all, our fighting spirit was fueled by the heart-felt battle cry: “Remember Pearl Harbor!”

Fighting in Europe and the Pacific, Americans from all walks of life served their country with honor and determination, ultimately securing victory and ensuring freedom for people around the world.

To honor those who served and sacrificed during World War II, the Armed Forces Commemorative Society and America Remembers present the Pearl Harbor Tribute .45 Pistol.
